Biography Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013) was Britain’s first female prime minister (1979-90). She was known for her tough uncompromising, conservative political views, and became dubbed as ‘The Iron Lady’. On the UK domestic front she instituted many free market reforms, implemented the controversial poll tax and reduced the power of trades unions. In international affairs, she cultivated a close relationship with American President Ronald Reagan and also developed a working relationship with Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev as the Cold War drew to a close.

The Danger of Running an Election on Fear

Image
Some elections are about hope. Some elections are about change. And some elections are about fear.

I started the day watching the sun rise over the ocean in Miami, thinking that’s what I’d write you all today — how candidates from both sides had turned to scare tactics in the final weeks of the election.

Well, it turns out that if you stoke enough fake fears, they can become real.

Today, pipe bombs were discovered in packages sent to public officials all over the country, including former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and the CNN offices in New York.

While officials haven’t yet announced a suspect or motive, all of the intended recipients are favorite targets of right-wing politicians and media.

Politicians from all sides denounced the bombs as “cowardly” and having “no place in our democracy.”

But they’ve also created a political climate with such heightened rhetoric that, for people exposed to the constant drumbeat of fear, real danger can feel like an inevi…

Senate and House Latest, Confronting Racism in Florida: 12 Days to Go Image

Image
Welcome to The Tip Sheet, a daily political analysis of the 2018 elections, based on interviews with Republican and Democratic officials, pollsters, strategists and voters.

Where things stand
• Red-state Senate Democrats have found a villain for their closing message: those dastardly Democrats.

Two of the most vulnerable incumbents, Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Joe Donnelly of Indiana, have moved aggressively in recent ads to distance themselves from left-wing elements in their own party.

The level of subtlety varies. Ms. McCaskill’s team put out a radio ad assuring voters that she is not “one of those crazy Democrats,” without naming who, exactly, qualifies for the Crazy Caucus. She also released an ad from veterans defending her tenure that included a striking caveat: “You don’t have to like her,” one says.

Mr. Donnelly, leaving nothing to chance, leaned on a visual aid. Brandishing an ax in his ad, he ticks off his less-than-pr…

Andrew Gillum and Ron DeSantis Trade Attacks Over Corruption and Racism in Florida Debate

Image
DAVIE, Fla. — Blistering verbal assaults overtook the race for Florida governor on Wednesday night, as rivals Andrew Gillum and Ron DeSantis presented voters with an onslaught of character insults in their final debate before the November election.

Mr. DeSantis declared Mr. Gillum a corrupt liar. Mr. Gillum all but accused Mr. DeSantis of being a racist, at one point spelling out on stage a slur used against African Americans.

And so it went for the duration of the debate, which picked up where the candidates left off in their first debate on Sunday. Wednesday’s contentious affair quickly devolved into a contest of raised voices, ignored time limits and wild cheers and jeers from the audience. The personal attacks suggested a hard edge to the last stretch of an already intense contest in the nation’s biggest presidential swing state, where more than 1.4 million voters have already cast early ballots.

Mr. Gillum, a Democrat, found himself on the defensive for much of the debate over a…

As Phil Bredesen

Image
MEMPHIS — As Phil Bredesen, the former Democratic governor of Tennessee now running for Senate, was wrapping up a voter forum at Rhodes College recently, the liberal-leaning mix of students, faculty and local residents began to grow restless from his unapologetically moderate brand of politics.

Finally, an audience member stood up and drew scattered applause by saying that supporters of Mr. Bredesen were “a little bit troubled” by his vow to back President Trump when he thinks the president is right. On what issues, the candidate was asked, would you support or oppose Mr. Trump?

It was the political equivalent of a batting practice pitch, a friendly heave served up so Mr. Bredesen could reassure supporters in his hotly contested race — and perhaps catch the attention of progressives further afield.

But Philip Norman Bredesen Jr., a low-key 74-year-old wealthy former health care executive, has no appetite to go viral.

fter allowing that some people “have very emotional reactions” to M…

Kerry Diamond is determined to get rid of single-use plastic at her coffee shop, Smith Canteen — so she put out a sandwich sign letting her customers know how much waste they’d kept out of landfills by bringing their own cups.

Her green deed earned her a $300 fine from the Department of Sanitation.

“I was like, oh my God, you have to be kidding me,” Diamond, who is also the editor of food magazine Cherry Bombe, told the News.

The fine was for the placement of the signboard. The message on the offending sign? “We’ve kept 2,057 cups out of the landfill in 2018! Thank you for BYOC.”

That’s Bring Your Own Cup, of course — something that earns customers a 10% discount at Smith Canteen, in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. Diamond is able to determine how many cups the restaurant has kept out of the landfill by tracking how often customers take that discount.

I just got a $300 summons from @nycsanitation for this Smith Canteen sandwich board, which was in the same place it's...
